Overview

What is the APM PMQ for PRINCE2 Practitioners?

Project management methods, of which PRINCE2® is the paradigm, offer the project manager a tried and tested structure and guidance in support of 'what, when, where and who', with two notable exceptions; PRINCE2® offers very limited guidance on 'why' and 'how', in that there are no detailed project management tools and techniques covered as part of the method. This is the remit of the PMQ: The APM Project Management Qualification for PRINCE2® Practitioners course and examination.

APM qualifications are aligned to the International Project Management Association (IPMA) Four-Level-Certification system, where PMQ is recognised at IPMA Level D. This three-day course provides delegates with comprehensive knowledge and understanding to prepare them for the Project Management Qualification. It recognises the prior learning that a PRINCE2® Practitioner has attained by removing from the examinable syllabus, topics that would have already been assessed within the PRINCE2® Practitioner Exam.

It will enable delegates to:

  •   Understand all elements of the PMQ syllabus
  •   Get to grips with the specific examination language
  •   Learn strategies and tactics for approaching the examination

Who is this qualification for?                    

This course is intended for project managers and aspiring project managers with at least two years project experience and hold a current PRINCE2® Practitioner qualification.

Pre-Requisites

Delegates should have experience of working in a project environment and have a basic understanding of project management issues.

Course Content

PMQ for PRINCE2® Practitioners course follows the syllabus provided by APM, which is built around the APM Body of Knowledge 6th edition. The course provides delegates with a detailed understanding of the underpinning tools, techniques and principles that are fundamental to successful project delivery.

The course is intensive and therefore delegates are expected to undertake revision work in the evening to prepare for the examination that will be taken at the end of the course. The additional work required during evenings will comprise consolidation reading and mock examination questions. The evening work is integral to the course and delegates should expect to spend two to three hours each evening on these activities.

PMQ Examination

Extensive examination practice and feedback is included in the workshop. The PMQ examination is normally scheduled for 14:00 on the final day of the course.

By Car:

From North
Exit A1 near Wetherby and follow the A58 signposted Leeds for approximately 12 miles. Cross the outer ring road and proceed a further 3 miles to a major intersection on the outskirts of Leeds. Follow signs towards M621, joining Leeds inner ring road and proceed through a tunnel as far as the Armley Gyratory roundabout. Keep in the left hand lane and take the first exit signposted A58/A62. Take next left turn signposted A58/A62 and pass Readmans store on the left. Take 4th exit from the next roundabout (effectively a South 90 degree right turn!). Follow a short stretch of dual carriageway to the next roundabout, turning right and climbing alongside railway arches on left. At the next roundabout turn left, signposted A58, then turn left into Brown Lane West (‘Leeds Climbing Wall’ and ‘The Rolls Royce/Aston Martin Dealership’ are on your right). The Training Centre is on the left approximately 150m down the road.

From South
Follow M1 which becomes M621 and leave M621 at junction 1, signposted A6110 (Leeds Outer Ring Road). At roundabout take 3rd exit, signposted Pudsey, Bradford and Airport, passing under M621, then immediately select right hand lane to turn right at next set of traffic lights, following signs for A62 Leeds. Proceed straight over the next mini-roundabout with new enterprise park on right and look for the ’Leeds Climbing Wall’ and ‘The Rolls Royce/Aston Martin Dealership’ on the left and the ‘Next’ building on right (after 600 metres). Turn right into Brown Lane West opposite the Leeds Climbing Wall. The Training Centre is on the left approximately 150m down the road.

From East
Exit M62 at junction 28 (A653) and follow signs for Leeds. Pass straight over 2 roundabouts, passing the White Rose Centre on left. Join Leeds ring road (A6110) and proceed straight over another roundabout and then straight through traffic lights (‘City West’ business centre with PC World and B & Q on left). Join main roundabout and take 2nd exit (straight over and signposted Pudsey, Bradford and Airport) then immediately select right hand lane to turn right at set of traffic lights, following signs for A62 Leeds. Proceed straight over next mini-roundabout with new enterprise park on right and look for the ’Leeds Climbing Wall’ and ‘The Rolls Royce/Aston Martin Dealership’ on the left and the ‘Next’ building on right (after 600 metres). Turn right into Brown Lane West opposite the Leeds Climbing Wall. The Training Centre is on the left approximately 150m down the road.

From West
Exit M62 at junction 27 following M621 to junction 1. Take first exit from roundabout (A6110) then immediately select right hand lane to turn right at next set of traffic lights, following signs for A62 Leeds. Proceed straight over next mini-roundabout with new enterprise park on right and look for the ‘Leeds Climbing Wall’ and ‘The Rolls Royce/Aston Martin Dealership’ on the left and ‘Next’ building on right (after 600 metres). By Rail:

Leeds central station is a 10 minute taxi ride or 45 minute walk

By Air:

Leeds/Bradford airport is approximately 45 minutes by car

This is an intensive three-day course and delegates will be expected to undertake around 15 hours pre-course work in order to be fully prepared (please check course outline carefully for the date you wish to attend)

  •   Delegates will be provided with pre-course reading by email prior to attending the course. Success on the course will be enhanced by close attention to the pre-reading materials.
  •   Delegates who have not received pre-course reading material within one week of the start of the course should contact us.

The APM Project Management Qualification Study Guide is designed to support candidates taking the APM Project Management Qualification (PMQ), formerly known as APMP). It explains the topics in the syllabus using a consistent language set and avoiding unnecessary and complex jargon. The main benefit of this approach is that it provides thorough coverage of the knowledge required for each area of the syllabus.

Key exam information:

  •   Two hours duration
  •   Closed-book
  •   Six essay-based questions to be selected from a total of ten. Each is worth 50 marks
  •   Candidates are required to achieve a minimum of 165 marks out of 00 (55%) to pass

Please note: delegates must bring photographic identification with them on the exam day (e.g. passport, driving license, company secure access card, student card) as it is an examination requirement to present it to the invigilator prior to the exam. Failure to produce a valid form of photographic identification may result in a candidate not being able to sit the exams. By successfully passing the PMQ examination candidates can choose to further develop their knowledge and understanding by preparing for the APMPQ Assessment Centre (IPMA Level C). The attainment of accreditations offered by professional bodies such as the Association for Project Management (APM) is increasingly recognised as an indicator of competence in project management.
